I think it has something to do with the fact that gravity is acting more on the uppermost part than the lower one, thus making it accelerate first until it becomes a closer part as a whole. LONG ANSWER: due to the force in the spring itself, both ends are moving towards the centre at the same rate simultaneously as the centre falls at 9.8m/s^2, which causes the ‘top’ end to move faster than usual and the ‘bottom’ end to appear to go nowhere. hey that wasn’t that much longer.
